Pain Medication Options:


Narcotics:

1. Demerol:

• Pros – fast acting (starts working in less than 5 minutes)

• Cons

o cause drowsiness

o nausea, or vomiting,

o respiratory depression

o low blood pressure

o If injected within 2-4 hours of delivery, Demerol has been found to cause breathing difficulties in some babies.


2. Stadol: more potent than Demerol

• Pros

o Fast acting (starts working in less than 5 minutes)

o Has minimal fetal effects

o Causes minimal nausea

• Cons

o Respiratory depressions

o Dizziness

o State of feeling unwell and unhappy

o Can cause respiratory depressions in baby


3. Fentanyl:

• Pros –

o Fast acting (starts working in less than 5 minutes)

o Minimal sedations

o Minimal fetal effects

• Cons

o Pain relief lasts about 45 minutes

o You and baby can experience some sedation and/or nausea.


4. Nubain:

• Pros -Fast acting (starts working in less than 5 minutes)

o Minimal nausea

o Minimal fetal effects

• Cons

o Sedation

o State of feeling unwell and unhappy

Narcotics can be given in any of these ways

• one-time injection

• IV administration

• PCA pump – patient controlled analgesia
