Narcotics:

Demerol:

Pros 

  • Fast acting (starts working in less than 5 minutes)

Cons

  • cause drowsiness
  • nausea, or vomiting,
  • respiratory depression
  • low blood pressure
  • If injected within 2-4 hours of delivery, Demerol has been found to cause breathing difficulties in some babies.

 Stadol: more potent than Demerol

Pros

  • Fast acting (starts working in less than 5 minutes)
  • Has minimal fetal effects
  • Causes minimal nausea

Cons

  • Respiratory depressions
  • Dizziness
  • State of feeling unwell and unhappy
  • Can cause respiratory depressions in baby

Fentanyl:

Pros 

  • Fast acting (starts working in less than 5 minutes)
  • Minimal sedation
  • Minimal fetal effects

Cons

  • Pain relief lasts about 45 minutes
  • You and baby can experience some sedation and/or nausea.

Nubain:

Pros

  • Fast acting (starts working in less than 5 minutes)
  • Minimal nausea
  • Minimal fetal effects

Cons

  • Sedation
  • State of feeling unwell and unhappy

Narcotics can be given in any of these ways

  • one-time injection
  • IV administration
  • PCA pump – patient controlled analgesia
